‘More than 30,000 off-duty police officers in London have joined a massive nationwide strike staged by British public sector workers against the government’s changes to pays and pensions.

Trade unions in Britain have said over 400,000 people took part in the 24-hour UK-wide strike on Thursday 10 May. Furthermore, London’s Metropolitan Police said around 32,000 off-duty police officers joined the striking public servants marching through London. Unions are angry with the government’s pension changes saying that public sector workers are being “robbed” as they will have to pay more and work longer for lower pensions.’

Riots kicking off around London

Tottenham MP David Lammy says it is “important our community remains calm” after a man was shot dead during an operation by police. A friend of Mark Duggan told Channel 4 News there may be unrest.

Police at the scene of Mark Duggan's shooting.

Officers from Operation Trident – the unit dedicated to dealing with gun crime in the black community – stopped a mini-cab in Ferry Lane on Thursday to carry out the arrest on 29-year-old Mark Duggan.

Two shots were fired by a Specialist Firearms Command Officer (CO19) and an illegal firearm was recovered from inside the car.

Mark Duggan died from gunshot wounds at the scene, and an officer was taken to hospital as a precautionary measure. Investigators recovered a police radio with a bullet lodged in it, suggesting the officer had narrowly avoided being killed.

The police watchdog, the Independent Police Complaint Commission, is investigating and has appealed for witnesses.

John Blake, who says he grew up with Mr Duggan on the nearby Broadwater Farm Estate, toldChannel 4 News the incident has created tension on the estate – the scene of riots in 1985 that led to the death of PC Keith Henry Blakelock.

Sorry for the cut pictures but this is the max lenght wordpress permits with this layout.

For many, photographs from the World War II have only been seen in grainy black and white.

But now, new colour images have emerged that show the full horror of the destruction inflicted by Nazi bombings across London.

The powerful images were released to mark the 70th anniversary of the launch of Winston Churchill’s ‘V for Victory’ campaign on July 19, 1941.

The genesis for the campaign began in January of that year when Belgian minister Victor de Laveleye suggested that his country uses the V as a rallying symbol. This was then adopted by the BBC and then Winston Churchill began to use the term later that year and waved the V sign with his right hand.

Other European leaders soon followed Churchill’s lead.

The Prime Minister’s campaign was launched after the Luftwaffe launched its sustained bombing of cities across Britain. Unsurprisingly, London bore the brunt of the raids between between September 7, 1940 and May 10, 1941.

The capital suffered 76 continuous nights of attacks which obliterated more than one million homes, while across Britain some 40,000 people were killed.

But even after eight months of bombing, British industrial production was never seriously hampered and the war effort continued to operate and expand.

Despite the terrifying raids by the Luftwaffe, they attacks failed to breaks the spirit of the British people. People pressed on with their lives and in one of these extraordinary images a man can be seen in a park calmly reading a book while a barrage balloon hovers close by.

Friday, 01 July 2011 08:18

‘According to media reports, the current peaceful strike across Britain is just moving to a harsh condition, as the police have begun clashing with anti-government protesters.

The Metropolitan police are once more exercising their kettling tactics to halt the industrial action, which was strongly condemned by Prime Minister David Cameron and other MPs, the Daily Telegraph reported. Hundreds of police forces are reportedly using the kettling tactics to break up the groups of protesters in Whitehall.

The protesters said that they were having a peaceful demonstration expressing their opposition to the crippling cuts imposed by the Tory-led government.’
