Radioactive cesium found in urine samples from infants – Fukushima

July 3, 2012

A small amount of radioactive cesium was found in the urine samples from 141 infants and young children living in Fukushima Prefecture, where the crippled nuclear power plant is located, among 2,022 of those surveyed, a Japanese research group has said. Three urine samples contained more than 10 becquerels of cesium per kilogram, including a case with 17.5 becquerels. Ten becquerels or less of cesium was found in the samples of the other 138, the Yokohama-based Isotope Research Institute said yesterday. The urine samples also contained about an average 64 becquerels of radioactive potassium. “The level of cesium is lower than that of potassium, and it definitely has no effect on the human body,” said Hideaki Karaki, honorary professor of food safety at the University of Tokyo. “But we still need to know how cesium was taken into those infants’ bodies.” The research institute said those children with over 10 becquerels of cesium were eating home-grown vegetables. The survey, conducted from last November to January, covered infants and children up to age 7.  According to Fukushima Prefecture, the cesium testing covered the largest number of citizens since the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant was hit by a massive earthquake and tsunami in March 2011

Black Boxes to Monitor All UK Internet and Phone Data

Tuesday, 03 July 2012

‘Internet and phone firms are preparing to install “black boxes” to monitor UK internet and phone traffic, and decode encrypted messages – including Facebook and GMail messages.

As part of the Home Office’s communications data bill, internet service providers (ISPs) and mobile phone companies will be obliged to collect communications records and keep them for a year, writes Channel 4 News Technology Producer Geoff White.

The government has insisted that the actual content of messages won’t be stored, but until now it has not been clear how communications companies will be able to separate content from “header data”, such as the sender and recipient of a message, and the date it was sent.’

‘A UK drugs firm has been hit with a $3billion penalty after admitting to the ‘biggest healthcare fraud in history’.

GlaxoSmithKline paid U.S. medics to prescribe potentially dangerous medicines to adults and children.

It handed out cash as well as everything from Madonna concert tickets to pheasant-hunting trips. Authorities branded GSK as ‘cheaters who thought they could make an easy profit at the expense of public safety, taxpayers, and millions of Americans’.’

Tantalizing Signs of Higgs Boson Found By U.S. Tevatron Collider

By Rebecca Boyle Posted 07.02.2012

If the Tevatron was a metal detector sweeping across a proverbial beach, the beeps of discovery would have been coming in very close succession at the end of its life. It was, we have learned, extremely close to finding the treasured Higgs boson … and then, last September, it shut down. Only another, more powerful detector, owned by someone else, will finally be able to grab it.

THIS fiery streak in the sky amazed Perth beachgoers at sunset as a suspected meteor plunged into the ocean off the WA coast.

PerthNow reader Gavin Trought snapped the ‘fire in the sky’ as it appeared over Cottesloe just before sunset on Friday, with remnants of the phenomenon still visible in the sky this afternoon.

“The weird streak in the sky as seen from Cottesloe last night. I noticed it just before sunset,” he told us.

Perth journalist Pip Moir also posted the photo she took at Cottesloe Beach to Twitter shortly after 6pm as puzzled onlookers debated what caused the colourful phenomena.

Banking Scandal: How Document Trail Reveals Global Scam

July 2, 2012 1 comment

Monday, 02 July 2012

‘The interest rate rigging scandal that has engulfed Barclays was the result of a coordinated attempt at collusion by traders working for a coterie of leading banks over at least five years, according to a series of lawsuits and legal rulings filed in courts in Asia and North America.

The lawsuits allege the fraud was extensive, spanning at least three continents and involving trades worth tens of billions of pounds. The allegations raise further serious questions about the banks’ ability to police themselves and the role of senior management in monitoring the activities of their employees.

In a 28-page statement of facts relating to last week’s revelation that Barclays had been fined a total of £290m, the US Department of Justice discloses how a network of traders working on both sides of the Atlantic conspired to influence both the Libor and Euribor interest rates – the rates at which banks lend to each other. It was, in effect, a worldwide conspiracy against the free functioning of the market.’
