‘Iraqi authorities have detained, interrogated, and beaten several protest organizers in Baghdad in recent days, Human Rights Watch said today. Iraqi authorities should stop the attacks and charge or release those being held, Human Rights Watch said.

In Iraqi Kurdistan, a protest organizer, Isma’il Abdullah, was abducted, stabbed, and beaten on May 27, 2011. The Kurdistan government should make sure its promised investigation of the episode is thorough, fair, and transparent, and leads to the prosecution of those responsible, Human Rights Watch said.

“Authorities in Baghdad and in Iraqi-Kurdistan are keeping their citizens from demonstrating peacefully,” said Joe Stork, deputy Middle East director at Human Rights Watch. “Iraq needs to make sure that security forces and pro-government gangs stop targeting protest organizers, activists, and journalists.”‘

‘The former head of Israel’s Mossad spy agency has warned against launching a war against Iran, saying any attack on Tehran by Tel Aviv would result in a “regional war.”

“It is important to know what the outcome of an attack on Iran would be, what would happen on the day after and what situation Israel would find itself in on the international stage,” CNN quoted Meir Dagan as saying on Thursday.

“An attack on Iran would mean regional war,” stressed Dagan, urging Israeli officials to “consider all options and not to run straight for the war option”.’

Anger over Spain’s dire economic situation has prompted thousands of people to fill Barcelona’s famous Plaza de Catalunya following an attempt by riot police to break up an anti-government protest camp there.

City authorities said they needed to empty the square, which is popular among football fans, ahead of Saturday’s Champions League final between Barcelona and Manchester United.

The single, which has been supported as a collaboration by pro-Palestine groups including Jews for Justice for Palestine, the Palestine Solidarity Campaign, and Just Peace for Palestine, features famous British musicians such as Dave Randall and Maxi Jazz of Faithless and Jamie Catto of 1 Giant Leap.

The Coldplay invitation has attracted thousands of fans to the song and is expected to boost the popular welcome it will potentially receive after official release in early July.

“Freedom for Palestine” calls, among other things, for Israel to tear down the apartheid wall in the West Bank and to begin respecting the fundamental human rights of the Palestinians.

Over the past few months, a heated international debate over the imposition of academic and cultural sanctions on Israel has raged on. Elvis Costello, the Pixies, Leftfield, Santana, the Klaxons, and a number of other artists and art groups have refused to perform in Israel, and the boycott is gaining steam day by day.
