Bahraini Troops Attack Protesters

Witnesses say regime forces fired tear gas and sound grenades on protesters as they were heading to the Martyr Square, formerly called Pearl Square, in the capital Manama on Wednesday. The anti-regime rally came hours after a special security court sentenced eight opposition activists to life in jail for “plotting to overthrow the government.”
The court also handed sentences of up to 15 years to 13 other activists. Seven people were sentenced in absentia.’
Blair: Iran Must Not be Allowed to Develop Nuclear Program

‘Iran must not be allowed to develop its nuclear program, Quartet envoy Tony Blair said Tuesday during a panel discussion as part of the three-day Israeli Presidential Conference in Jerusalem.”If we allow Iran to develop nuclear capabilities, there will be consequence, therefore we must not let that happen,” Blair said.’

Bill would Approve US Role in Libya Retroactively

‘Two top US senators on Tuesday introduced a bill that would retroactively support America’s military role in Libya, amid a raging debate over whether President Barack Obama flouted the law by not getting prior congressional approval.
“I believe we will find a strong, bipartisan majority that is in favor of authorizing our current military operations in Libya and seeing this mission through to success,” said Republican US Senator John McCain, one of the authors of the bill.’

‘Israel Returns Nuclear Waste to US’

‘Head of Israel’s Nuclear Energy Commission Shaul Horev says Tel Aviv has returned nuclear waste from its Sorek nuclear reactor to the United States.
According to estimates, Israel has sent back at least dozens of kilograms, probably more, of 93-percent enriched uranium. The operation took place after Israel’s Nuclear Energy Commission and the US Department of Energy signed an agreement for the return of the nuclear waste over a year and a half ago.’
Horev, who spoke at the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) ministerial conference on nuclear safety in Vienna on Monday, did not specify the exact amount of waste, Israeli daily Ha’aretz reported.’
US to Unveil Afghanistan Troops Pullout

‘In a planned televised speech on Wednesday, Obama is expected to elaborate on the details of his plans, which all deal specifically with the 30,000 surge troops dispatched to Afghanistan last year, the Associated Press reported.
The US president is reportedly mulling over a phased withdrawal as his first option that would bring home about 5,000 troops over the summer and another 5,000 by the end of 2011. The remainder would stay in the war-ravaged Asian country until late 2012.
Obama’s second option is withdrawing 15,000 troops in 2011 and his third option is reportedly aimed at setting an endpoint, requiring the 30,000 surge troops to be brought home by December 2012. The pace of troop withdrawal in the third option will be decided by US commanders.’
US Investigators Reportedly say Yemen’s Saleh Hit by Advanced US-Made Missile

‘An investigation team from the United States has reportedly found that an attack that wounded President Ali Abdullah Saleh and several senior members of his government while performing the Friday prayers in his Sana’a presidential compound earlier in June was carried out by an advanced US-made missile designed for special assassination operations, sources close to the probe told Al Arabiya.
“The missile is very advanced and still not widely used. Only the United States and Russia currently employ this weapon,” a source said.’

US Army Base Transfer in Japan Delayed

‘The United States and Japan have acknowledged dropping a 2014 deadline for the relocation of an American military base on the Japanese island of Okinawa.
The meeting involved US Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton and Secretary of Defense Robert Gates, and Japanese Foreign Minister Takeaki Matsumoto and Defense Minister Toshimi Kitazawa, Reuters reported.’

Israel Navy Commander: ‘Hate Flotilla’ to Gaza Must be Stopped

‘Israel Navy commander Adm. Eliezer Marom issued a stark warning on Sunday for the organizers of the Gaza flotilla intended to set sail at the end of the month.
“The Navy has prevented and will continue to prevent the arrival of the ‘hate flotilla’ whose only goals are to clash with IDF soldiers, create media provocation and to delegitimize the State of Israel,” Marom cautioned, speaking during the Israel Navy Divers’ Course concluding ceremony.’
